Join the fight to hold businesses accountable and ensure public restroom access for all Seattle residents as required by law.
Seattle and across King County, large retail and grocery chains are illegally denying customers access to restroom facilities. Despite clear state and city laws mandating access, employees are often instructed to turn people away. It is a violation of the law and an affront to public health and human dignity.
From grocery stores in Capitol Hill to big-box retailers in SoDo, a pattern of neglect and deliberate obstruction has emerged. Businesses are shirking their basic responsibilities, creating unsanitary conditions, and putting the health of our community at risk—especially seniors, individuals with medical conditions, and families with children. This has to stop. We are taking action to force compliance through the Consumer Protection Act, and we need your help.
Concerns over vandalism or the cost of cleaning do not exempt a business from complying with these laws.
Here are the basic requirements they are often ignoring:
The most powerful tool we have to hold these corporations accountable is the testimony of the people they have harmed. Have you or someone you know been denied restroom access at a grocery store, service stations who sell coffee and drinks, or large retailer in Seattle? Your story is not just a complaint; it's evidence.
By sharing your experience, you can help build the legal case as we move forward with a lawsuit against all non-compliant parties. Your voice is critical to ensuring that no one else has to suffer the shame, pain, or embarrassment of being denied a basic human need or having an accident on their premise.
